In April, 2011, the MPS Board of Education passed a resolution stating that Minneapolis Public Schools will establish a task force on ELL education to report its recommendations on ELL education to the Board of Education and superintendent by January 1, 2012.
The task force will work with community resource people, experts in the field, current district ELL leadership and district administration to evaluate current and future practices in ELL education that promise to improve the district’s ELL and regular education programs for students who receive ELL services.
The task force will make use of all available resources, including the Council of the Great City Schools, the Minnesota Department of Education, Minnesota Minority Education Partnership and St. Paul Schools to develop a comprehensive plan for the district’s education of all English Language Learners.
The Commission is charged with the following:
• Providing input on the strategic plan and performance metrics
• Monitoring performance metrics bi-annually
• Reviewing progress and suggesting revisions for the strategic plan and performance metrics annually
• Suggesting innovative approaches to accelerate student learning
